Throughout the evolving coronavirus health emergency, FirstEnergy’s Ohio electric companies are committed to closely monitoring developments related to the coronavirus and taking appropriate precautions to protect the health and safety of our employees, contractors and customers.

To ensure that safety, effective immediately, FirstEnergy Ohio electric companies are temporarily suspending all Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Energy Efficiency programs until further notice. Please check back for updates.

This will not impact FirstEnergy’s Ohio C&I customers with pre-approved applications. Customers with pre-approved C&I Energy Efficiency applications may check the status of those applications by emailing a program representative at EnergyEfficiencyPrograms@firstenergycorp.com.

FirstEnergy’s Mercantile Customer Program continues to accept applications for projects that are already completed.

Food Service Incentive Program

The Food Service Incentive Program is offered to small commercial and industrial customers of Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison (FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities) to encourage participants to install high-efficiency food service and commercial kitchen equipment. Typical participants in the Food Service Incentive Program include grocery, convenience stores and restaurants, as well as schools, hospitals and lodging facilities which include food service equipment.

Flat-rate incentives are available for the following equipment categories:

Effective Dates

To qualify for incentives through the Food Service Incentive Program, equipment must be new and installed after January 1, 2017.

Pre‐Approval Requirements

All Food Service Incentive applications received by the program will require pre-approval before the purchase and installation of materials.

Limitations

Incentives available from the Food Service Incentive Program are shown below, and are limited to the total equipment cost. Only new equipment is eligible for incentives under this program.

Night Covers for Refrigerated Display Cases Eligible projects include the installation of night covers on open reach-in refrigerated cases during unoccupied hours. Covers must be in use for at least six hours daily to be eligible for incentives. $9 per linear foot
Strip Curtains for Walk-in Coolers and Freezers

Strip Curtains for Walk-in Coolers and Freezers Eligible strip curtains must be installed on walk-in coolers and freezers that have ineffective or no existing strip curtains in place. Strip curtains must be new, made of polyethylene, and be at least 0.06″ thick. Low temperature curtains must be used for freezer applications. Eligible units must be in use at least 2.5 hours per day. $1.50 per ft2
Anti-Sweat Heater Controls on Cooler and Freezer Doors

Anti-Sweat Heater Controls on Cooler and Freezer Doors Anti-sweat heater controls sense the humidity in the store outside reach-in, glass door cases and turn off anti-sweat heaters during periods of low humidity. Only the installation of new anti-sweat heater controls in existing cases, with no existing controls, are eligible for incentives. $30 per door
Beverage and Snack Vending Machine Controls

Beverage and Snack Machine Controls Eligible sensors must be installed on non-ENERGY STAR-certified vending machines. Each control must be able to automatically turn off lighting when there is no occupancy, and must modulate the refrigeration system for peak performance. $50 per control
ENERGY STAR Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machines

Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machines ENERGY STAR vending machines have high efficiency refrigeration and lighting systems. In addition, these machines have built-in controls that reduce lighting and refrigeration loads during unoccupied periods. Only new ENERGY STAR vending machines are eligible for incentives. $65 per machine
ENERGY STAR Commercial Electric Combination Ovens

Commercial Electric Combination Ovens Electric combination ovens must be ENERGY STAR-certified to be eligible for incentives. Only new, unused equipment is eligible. New construction and replacement projects are eligible under this measure. $600 per oven

Commercial Electric Convection Ovens ENERGY STAR-certified convection ovens must be new. Used equipment is not eligible for incentives. New construction and replacement projects are eligible under this measure. $350 per oven
ENERGY STAR Commercial Electric Steam Cookers

Commercial Hot Food Holding Cabinets ENERGY STAR hot food holding cabinets have better designs with better insulation to reduce heat loss and maintain more uniform food temperature. Only new (unused) equipment is eligible for incentives. Half size: $110 per cabinet

Three-quarter Size: $185 per cabinet

Full size: $250 per cabinet

How do I apply?

Step 1 – The participant should complete and submit a program application online and upload required documents through the application portal. The following documents are required for a pre-approval (if the project is already complete, applicants should also submit the required documentation listed in Step 3):

  • Completed Food Service Calculator spreadsheet
  • Manufacturers’ specification (cut) sheets for the proposed equipment. Please highlight all relevant information such as the equipment efficiency ratings.
  • Completed and signed W-9 tax form for the incentive payee. The W-9 form must be current and dated within the last 24 months.
  • If applicable, customers who wish to issue all or a portion of their incentive to a third party should complete a Dual Incentive Payments form.
  • Copy of utility bill to confirm account number and service address. If desired, the participant may obscure all cost and rate related information.

Step 2 – The Program Administrator will notify the applicant via email when the review is complete and funds have been reserved. The applicant will have 90 days from the date of the pre-approval letter to complete the project.

Step 3 – Once the project is complete, the participant should review the approved application for any changes to the project that occurred during installation and make any needed corrections. The following final documentation should be submitted to the Program Administrator for review:

  • Detailed, itemized invoices or proofs of purchase for the equipment installed.
  • Manufacturers’ specification (cut) sheets for any additional equipment installed.
  • Completed letter of attestation.
  • Revised Food Service calculator spreadsheet (this requirement is waived if no changes were made during construction).
  • If applicable, customers who wish to issue all or a portion of their incentive to a 3rd party should complete a Dual Incentive Payment form

Upon receipt and verification of all required documentation, the incentive check will be processed and mailed to the applicant or to an authorized representative, if requested on the application.
